Lil Wayne Sues Universal Music, Says He's Owed Profits From Drake, Nicki Minaj & Tyga

Lil Wayne claims he's owed tens of millions of dollars for discovering & nurturing successful recording artists.
Universal Music Group is paying itself instead of shelling out royalties it owes Lil Wayne , according to a federal lawsuit filed by the rapper-producer's attorneys Monday in California.
Dwayne Carter Jr., known as Lil Wayne, is suing UMG and SoundExchange, claiming he's been shorted millions from his work discovering and nurturing artists like Drake , Nicki Minaj and Tyga.
Lil Wayne's 30 Biggest Billboard Hits
Carter claims Universal has diverted tens of millions of dollars of his profits to repay itself for the $100 million it advanced to Cash Money Records, Inc.
"With Universal’s knowledge of Lil Wayne’s rights to partial ownership and profits from those artists, Universal and Cash Money entered into a series of agreements which, among other things, diverted Lil Wayne’s substantial profits to repay debts of Cash Money," states the complaint. "As a result, 100% of the profits that should have been paid to Lil Wayne as a result of his ownership of Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga records have been seized by Universal to repay debts that were neither incurred by nor were the obligations of Lil Wayne."
Carter's Young Money Label is a joint venture with Universal's Cash Money Records designed to manufacture, distribute, promote and exploit performances of new recording artists discovered by Carter and signed to the label, according to the complaint.
A Timeline of Lil Wayne's Beef With Birdman & Cash Money
He claims their 2003 agreement states the label's profits "would be divided 51% - 49% between Cash Money and Carter, and ownership of all the Young Money Label property, (e.g., master recordings, copyrights, intellectual property, good will) similarly would be owned 51% - 49% between Cash Money and Carter, respectively."
After multiple extensions, the term expired June 4, 2015, which puts Drake's upcoming album in the crosshairs.
“Universal should be grateful and respectful to Lil Wayne for the millions of dollars in distribution fees and profits they have earned on the artists he brought to the company, instead of seizing all of his profits on those artists in a desperate attempt to recoup the tens of millions of dollars they are owed by Cash Money Records,” said Carter's attorney Howard E. King of King, Holmes, Paterno & Soriano in a Monday statement.
SoundExchange, the nonprofit that collects and distributes digital performance royalties on behalf of copyright owners, is also named as a defendant in the suit.
Carter claims "Universal has claimed a right to 100% of the label performance royalties attributed to the YME Records" and "SoundExchange refuses to pay any of the money due to Young Money LLC and Carter individually based on Universal’s conflicting demand."
Carter wants the court to clear it up and is seeking at least $40 million in damages and disgorged profits and a "judgment declaring the parties’ respective rights with regard to Plaintiffs’ share of label performance royalties."
Says a Universal Music Group spokesperson: "These claims are entirely without merit. It should be no surprise that we learned of the lawyer's complaint through the news media. We don't intend to dignify this with further public comment except to say that we will vigorously contest it and that the merits of our case will carry the day.”

Everything We Know About Beyonce's Upcoming Album

No need to be a card-carrying member of the Bey Hive to know that Beyonce is cooking up more ear candy -- according to the Internet, at least. While the queen of surprise releases has kept her lips zipped about her 2013 Beyonce follow-up, those within Mrs. Carter's inner-circle (or at least have visited the studio with her) have left little breadcrumbs about her rumored visual album release.
Here's what's floating on the Internet about Bey's forthcoming delivery.
Why Are People Suddenly Afraid of Beyonce's Black Pride?
This could be the album title and release date
While no formal title or release date has been announced, there's Twitter whispers that the set will be called B6 . Her past collaborator, producer Boots, also reportedly tweeted-then-deleted the following: “B6 is dope” and “this is the most exciting album i’ve ever worked on," per
Buzzfeed.
Idolator also reports that another fan source says that Bey's so-called "album film" could have something to do with lemonade and Indian actor Kahlil Joseph.
EXCLUSIVE: Beyoncé's album film is near. Be patient! Get familiar with Kahlil Joseph.

The album could also arrive as early as next month.
Bey has been spotted on different sets
Before Beyonce made the world stop with her
"Formation" video , the Hive spotted her in various locations, shooting what could be potential music videos or concert montages for her Formation tour, kicking off April 27 in Miami. Twitter fan accounts have shared photos of her shooting in
L.A.'s Skid Row as well as an unknown location in Los Angeles that seemed to involve Bey jumping off the side of a building.
Everything We Know About New Beyoncé Music
A joint album with Jay Z may be on deck
Word on some timelines was that the Carters were delivering a collaborative project. While the power couple have probably raked in daughter Blue Ivy's college tuition money with the boozy 2013 hit " Drunk in Love ," they have several duets under their belts, including "Part II (On The Run)," "Deja Vu," "Upgrade U," "Hollywood," "That's How You Like It," "'03 Bonnie & Clyde" and, if you really want to get technical, "Tom Ford," which employed Bey ad-libs. The two were also spotted filming in New Orleans' Superdome while producer Detail told Billboard last February, "Beyoncé and Jay Z are actually doing something together this year." Guess we'll have to wait and watch the throne for this one.
Collaborators
Several artists have teased booking studio time with Bey over the past 365 including D.R.A.M. ,
Future and Sia . Last July, Future told Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club that he was at Jay Z's "crib," "actually working with Bey." (Note: Bey showed signs of being a part of the Future Hive when she incorporated "Where Ya At" and "F--- Up Some Commas" during her headlining set at Made in America Festival last September).
Last July, D.R.A.M. posted a photo with Bey (who got her dance on to his hit "Cha Cha" for the 'gram) while Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Bizzy Bone also revealed on Instagram that "Beyoncé wanna work with the band ...... Y'all hit her up and tell the QUEEN of RnB we ready." Singer/songwriter
Sia also offered in an interview with Rolling Stone
that she was in Bey boot camp. "In the end, she had maybe 25 songs of mine on hold, and I was very excited to get a couple of them back," said Sia. "Definitely one is on the album."
Mike Will Made It also said in a Complex interview last March that Rae Sremmurd's Swae Lee was in the stu with Bey, which proved to be correct after he landed writing credit on "Formation."

Hillary Clinton: 'I Want to be as Good a President as Beyoncé is a Performer'
Hillary Clinton and Cara Delevingne could make a cameo... somewhere
Us Weekly reports that the presidential candidate popped up on set while Beyonce was shooting a music video in Los Angeles (reps for both parties did not immediately respond to Billboard's requests for comment). While the outlet's sources did not confirm the guest appearance, it wouldn't come as a complete shock if Clinton offers a body roll or two in a Bey video given her co-sign last December. "I want to be as good a president as Beyoncé is a performer," Clinton said at an Iowa rally.
Meanwhile, supermodel Cara Delevingne posted matching studio pics on Instagram that showed their hands on soundboards last March. To note, Bey has rubbed elbows with runway queens like Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman in the past. See: "Yonce" video .
The album is "beyond awesome"

"This isn't just another concert -- This is hip-hop history,” Diddy says in the release. “The Bad Boy Family includes some of the biggest names in music and songs that helped define a whole generation of music. Also, we are celebrating one of the greatest of all time - Notorious B.I.G. This will be a night to remember. I can't wait to see you all there.”
Singer Faith Evans recently appeared on the Dame Dash Radio show, teasing that a Biggie hologram performance could be in the works. "We actually are in development with a hologram [company] but I don't necessarily know to what extent I'm going to perform with it but I definitely want to debut it probably in the first video for the album and maybe use it a little bit performance-wise but that depends on a lot of things," she explained. Evans added, "If this Bad Boy [reunion] tour ever really happens, that might be something we might consider and if I was to go on that tour, of course, I'd use it but just not over-use it."
Faith Evans Teases Notorious B.I.G. Hologram, Says Duets Album Is in 'Finishing Stages'
Rapper Lil' Kim also discussed working with the Bad Boy Fam. "I'm in my comfort zone when I'm with my Bad Boy family," the Lil Kim Season MC
recently told Billboard. "We have a such an organic, natural connection when we're on-stage. It's perfect, it's fun. It's just second nature to me."
The sure-to-be-epic show, produced by Live Nation, will span Bad Boy Entertainment's hefty catalog over the past 20 years including Puff's recent sonic motion picture MMM, which included the hits "Workin," "Auction" and "You Could Be My Lover."

Wale Shares Details, Reveals Producers for Forthcoming Album 'Shine'

In January, Wale became the first rapper to open a president's State of the Union Address. Barack Obama took to the podium for his final SOTU speech as Commander-in-Chief after the D.C. rhymer delivered his hits "Chillin'," "LoveHate Thing" and "White Shoes" at the White House viewing party (Jan. 12). At the end of his set, Wale also announced his fifth album Shine .
Two months later, Wale repped his native city once again as the headliner for the Events DC Presents Music showcase , hosted by the Washington DC Economic Partnership at the Historic Scoot Inn for Austin's SXSW festival on Tuesday night (March 15). During his set, Folarin offered more details about his forthcoming project, teasing that it would arrive in a "couple of months." He also debuted a new track called "Pretty Young Thing."
Wale Performs at President Obama's State of the Union Address, Announces Fifth Album 'Shine'
"It's a little bit more melody and shit 'cause I been on some, like, I don't want to call nobody to do my hooks no more," he tells Billboard after his performance. "I want to do it myself but just as an evolution as an artist."
Wale admits that during the creative process, he's penned material for another artist that may end up his own. "I'm also writing for other artists so sometimes I may sing a song I wrote for somebody and I'll be like, 'Eh I like it. It's me.' even if it may not be performance good," he said without offering specific names.
He even nodded Lil Wayne for his dual talents. "Lil Wayne said something in an interview where he's like, 'Yo I want to be the best at everything.' or like, 'I want to be a great rapper but if I write a song, it may not be the best vocally but I wrote it and you'll get what I'm saying.'," he explained. "I'm conveying the emotion so that's what I'm trying to do currently with this new shit."

But don't start calling Wale a rapper slash singer just yet. "I'm not trying to go full R&B or nothing like that," he offers. "I just wanna make vibes."
On the production side, the  revealed that he is working with beatsmiths Nez and Rio, Diplo , Beat Billionaire and Metro Boomin'. He kept a tight lip on features, tough. "I just want to make sure the business is straight on those," he said.
Beyond rap, Wale -- who scored his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with 2015's The Album About Nothing -- says he is serious about starting his own pro wrestling company. The long-time WWE stan (his favorites include Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio and CM Punk) says, "It's a great business and I don't know anybody with my point of view [who] has ever attempted to do it."

Lil Wayne Pens Huffington Post Piece On TIDAL Philanthropy Project

Lil Wayne shares the details of his college philanthropy project with TIDAL .
New Orleans, Louisiana rapper Lil Wayne recently put his pen to good use for a
Huffington Post piece detailing a project he's currently working on with TIDAL.
The Young Money wordsmith began his piece by touching on his time spent at the University of Houston. He says he witnessed firsthand the amount of potential college students have, but also pointed out that with so much on their plates, giving back can sometimes be difficult.
"Having gone to the University of Houston for a bit, I saw firsthand how much potential and energy college students have," Lil Wayne wrote. "They have so many opportunities to make the world a better place, but they have a lot on their plates with the books, parties and jobs at the same time. They have the world at their fingertips but the weight of the world on their shoulders. It's hard to find time for themselves; let alone time to give back."
Lil Wayne later spoke on the specifics of his college philanthropy project with TIDAL, which challenged 50 schools to give back.
"That's why I partnered with Tidal on a college-focused philanthropy project," he wrote. "I feel blessed to be part of this project initiative with an outstanding amount of responses- nearly 50 schools across the country entered a contest for a chance to see me perform at their school for free."
The colleges involved in the project took part in everything from organizing a bottled water drive for Flint, Michigan to raising thousands for the Special Olympics. The ultimate winner was the University of Louisiana - Lafayette.
Lil Wayne's concert at the school is scheduled to take place next month, and will be live streamed on TIDAL.com.

"The Breakfast Club" Sued By DJ Star Over The Game Interview

Power 105.1's The Breakfast Club is known for its insightful interviews not only with rappers, but with actors, comedians and various celebrities.
DJ Star is claiming that the show, in particular one of the hosts DJ Envy, took a September interview with The Game too far and, according to TMZ , he is suing for $10 million.
During the interview, DJ Envy asks The Game about his various beefs. The Compton, California rapper has feuded with Stitches ,
Young Thug and others this past year. DJ Envy asks about a time when The Game stood up for him against DJ Star.
"I was like, dude, I'll break your jaw, dude," The Game says. "Envy is my dog. I'm still gonna break his jaw when I see him."
The Game was reportedly threatened with arrest if he returned to New York after DJ Star notified the police of his comments on the program.
DJ Star is suing for defamation and claims that DJ Envy derailed his career.

Iggy Azalea Endured "Psychotic Breakdown" Last Year

Iggy Azalea says she suffered from a "psychotic breakdown," last year.
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea serves as the cover artist for Schon magazine's 30th issue, and in the issue she took time to discuss the seemingly never-ending struggles she endured last year.
According to HotNewHipHop.com , among the topics discussed during Iggy's interview with Schon was a "psychotic breakdown" she suffered last year. Iggy explained that she was both tired and stressed out, and unhappy with her portrayal in the media.
"I had to have a psychotic breakdown last year. I felt tired and stressed out. Last year, I felt like I was definitely not in control of the media's narrative of me," Iggy Azalea said.
In 2015, the Aussie musician was heavily criticized by the Hip Hop community , canceled various performances, and faced a handful of other setbacks.
Following the cancellation of her “The Iggy Azalea Great Escape Tour," the rapper offered little explanation to fans, merely stating that she'll "be back out on the road when the next album is done."
Just days after Iggy's “The Iggy Azalea Great Escape Tour" was canceled, she was forced to call off an appearance at Pittsburgh Gay Pride following criticism from the LGBTQ community over past comments.
In addition to last year's breakdown, Iggy also touched on her upcoming album, Digital Distortion, in her interview with Schon.

Tupac Shakur's Mother Fighting Alimony In Divorce

Afeni Shakur filed for divorce recently from her husband of 12 years, Gus Davis.
TMZ reports that Shakur , who is Tupac's mother, is fighting alimony and that the couple does not have a prenuptial agreement. She filed the divorce case in North Carolina where the court does not settle cases with a half-and-half split, but analyzes each case to determine the best settlement for each couple.
Davis is asking for half of Shakur's income from the Tupac Estate. The late rapper's mother brings in $900,000 per year from projects regarding Tupac's music, licensing and merchandise. Shakur totals $20,000 a month after expenses and Davis is asking for half of that, $10,000, to be paid in alimony per month for the rest of his life.
Shakur has responded to the request by filing documents asking the judge to not grant the money to Davis.
The couple has been separated for a year. Davis resides on their 50-acre ranch in the Tar Heel State and is asking the court for permission to stay on the property. Shakur is living in Sausalito, California.
Shakur's previous husband, Mutulu, is seeking an early release from his 60-year prison sentence. He was sentenced in 1998 for plotting the 1981 robbery of a Brinks armored car. Mutulu Shakur was considered a father figure to Tupac.
